Nasagiweya Historical Society
Meetings and Events

During the past year, while the Nasagiweya Historical Society has not been able to hold general meetings due to the Covid-19 pandemic, members of the executive have been working on introducing a new initiative.
As a result, we are pleased to announce the introduction of the NHS Historical Plaque Program. For more information check here

Merry Christmas to all.
Stay Safe and Healthy during the remainder of the Covid-19 pandemic
and hopefully we will be back to normal with a Happy 2021!

As we approach the date when we would normally meet in May, this is just a reminder that the Nasagiweya Historical Society will not meet in person during the COVID-19 pandemic. At present, the April, May and likely June meetings are postponed to a later date. There is also no Archive open house during this time as the Town of Milton has closed all municipal facilities until July 5. The executive is watching the announcements that are made during this time and will arrange to resume meetings when it is deemed safe to do so. We will keep you informed via email.

In keeping with the current situation and all the recommendations, we will be cancelling the Annual General Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 14.   As the Town of Milton has closed all the town facilities, our Archives room at the Nassagaweya Tennis Centre and Community Hall is also closed until further notice.  Keep safe, everyone.

Tuesday December 10th - 6 pm  Christmas Potluck at Nassagaweya Presbyterian Church 3097 15 Sideroad (east of Guelph Line) Campbellville.

As you may of heard the Mohawk Inn & Conference Centre and Chophouse will be closing its doors Dec 15 2019.
After 52 years it is time to close and rebuild a modern Hotel and Conference Centre with updated amenities. Owners Bridget and Shawn Saulnier are proud of the community and welcome people to share their memories, stories and history at and to come out to the Mohawk Inn one last time for a Festive Farewell following the Santa Claus Parade. #memoriesofmohawk
Nassagaweya Historical Society Meeting
Tuesday, November 12, 2019

We are very pleased to have Tim and Sandra Gray as our speakers.

In honour of Remembrance Day they will reflect on the life of a First World War soldier through letters and other personal items of family members who joined the war effort as well as Tim’s research into the general milieu of the time.

Tim and Sandra live in Guelph. Sandra grew up as the 6th generation on a mixed farm in Nassagaweya, now known as Terre Bleu Lavender Farm. As they both had close relatives participate in WW 1 Tim has done extensive research on this war period and they had the opportunity in 2008 to visit various war sites in France and Belgium, including visiting the grave site of one of Tim’s family members.

Annual Meeting - Tuesday April 9th, 2019 - 7:30 pm
3097 15 Sideroad, (Haltonville)  Campbellville
Speaker: Wayne and Dianne Taylor "Time with the Roads Dept of Nassagaweya"

During the final days of the Second World War, an RCAF crew of six young Canadians sets out on a routine mission, dropping food and supplies for isolated Burmese villages. Their Dakota cargo plane takes off over the jungle--and vanishes without a trace. Forty-five years later, a Burmese hunter finds what's left of the wreckage on a hillside, starting a chain of events which led to the recovery of the Canadians' remains.

The volunteer crew was made up of six men from across the country: pilot William Bennet Rogers, co-pilot William Joseph Kyle, wireless operator Charles Peter McLaren, navigator David McLean Cameron, wireless operator Stanley James Cox, and cargo handler Cornelius John Kopp. Their average age was 22. Lost over Burma: Search for Closure weaves together their lives and wartime experiences--through the memories of colleagues and families--with scenes of the dramatic 1996 mission into the Burmese jungle to recover their remains and the emotion-laden funeral near Rangoon, where they have finally been laid to rest with full military honours.

Nasagiweya (Nassagaweya) Historical Society continues to preserve the history of the former Nassagaweya Township which is now considered rural Town of Milton.
We have gathered so much material we now have our archives housed at the Nassagaweya Tennis Centre and Community Hall at Guelph Line and Campbellville Sideroad.  We are planning on opening to the public one day a month on a weekend in the very near future. We are always looking for new members and also will welcome any youth that is interested in their local history, we would be happy to give volunteer hours.
To help with this process we have annual fundraisers. This year we are having an Autumn Afternoon Tea on Saturday October 21st, from 2-4 p.m. We are holding this event at Ebenezer United Church, 12274 Guelph Line, Campbellville.  Hoping this will be a lovely day to drive to north rural Milton to enjoy the autumn scenery. The cost is $25 per person (special rate for groups of 8 and more purchased in advance). Not only Tea, sandwiches and sweets to enjoy, but also Dan Kranstz, an illusionist, will walk around and visit each table. Yes there is a door prize or two.  Special hats are also welcome. Also Raffle Tickets will be sold for Draws on a variety of Gift Baskets. Our Local History Books will also be available for purchase.
Please pass this on to friends, family, neighbours that are new or old to the community and  may not have heard of us.
Looking forward to your support
